A Normal Part of an Abnormal World

Disability and brokenness are present in every aspect of our world today.  You cannot go to the grocery store or often just down the street without seeing evidence of the fall in the physical abnormalities of many people today.  This is not even including the less apparent mental deficits that are ever growing in our society.  Even in the little “bubble” of my world at college, I am daily reminded of the sinful and broken state of God’s Creation by the people I see.

But this is all pretty obvious to everyone, so I’m not going to dwell on this depressing thought…

Rather, I would like to talk about the source of disability.  There are new theories created every day in an attempt to explain away the brokenness increasingly present in our world.  There is one view that states that “disability is an abnormal part of life in a normal world.”  Through this idea, we elevate everyone in our world today that is not directly affected by special needs.  This theory makes euthanasia the most ideal option to rid our lives of this brokenness, especially since without disability everything would be perfect in life today.  Obviously, this idea is not biblical truth.  Today, we see brokenness throughout all of creation.

Another viewpoint states that “disability is a normal part of life in a normal world.”  This thought removes all sense of suffering and grief someone experiences when being touched by a disability.  If we believe this is true, then we should just get used to all of the brokenness around us act like nothing is a big deal.  Disability is then elevated to a very normal thing of our world today.  Once again, this is not the case.  There are many other ideas out there to explain disability, but I am just going to skip straight to biblical truth.  Disability is a very normal part of our abnormal world.  Once sin came into the world with the fall, God’s perfect creation was shattered.  Everyone of us now experiences this brokenness in all aspects of our lives.  Special needs and disability is just further evidence given today.  Because of sin in this world, I am just as broken and disabled if not more as a child with down syndrome or an adult trapped forever in a wheelchair because of cerebral palsy.  This should daily grieve us.

Yet, thankfully, it does not end here… One day the brokenness of this world will disappear and the kingdom of heaven and a new earth will come. How beautiful and exciting is this! We will have new bodies, and all physical and mental disabilities will be healed.  Being involved in the lives of many people touched by special needs only causes me to long so much more for Heaven and Christ’s return.  With John I am saying, “Come, Lord Jesus.”

He will wipe every tear from their eyes.  There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

  1. Great post! Like you, I am so grateful that “it doesn’t end here…” We have the gift of eternal life with a perfect father.

  2. I loved reading this! You communicated the Biblical perspective in such a beautiful way that it really made me consider how I view disabilities. Thank you so much for sharing.

  3. Wow, what an inspiration you and John are to so many. Thank you for who you are in Christ and for the love you show for our savior, Jesus Christ.
